So let me just start off by asking is there anything better than biting into a delicious burger and having gooey melted cheese just oozing out? I just don’t think there is, I don’t actually think I have ever eaten a burger without cheese, I would just feel like it was incomplete without it.
I have never really liked frozen burgers and that is mostly because they usually have minced onion in them and I hate the smell of them cooking (I know I’m weird) so they were never really something I ate as a kid but I do remember my mum buying the only frozen burgers I ever did like and it was because they had cheese in the middle of the burger. Now it may just be me and my memor but I have filed these burgers into the “things I loved as a kid and have never seen since” file in my mind, I’m pretty sure everyone has one of these right? Other things I have filed away in there are onken frufoo yoghurt filled chocolate balls, cool bits ice cream bites, 3D doritos and salt and vinegar flavoured seasoning salt. Let me know in the comments if you have any more things you had and loved as a kid that you can’t find anymore.
I have tried a few homemade burger recipes over the years which included eggs or crushed crackers and other things to bind the mixture but none have ever actually tasted good, so I decided to try making them without any of these extra ingredients and surprisingly they didn’t fall apart, this is possibly because I used a burger press to mould them so they were pretty compact but I can’t be sure, next time I make them I will try it without and just use my hands and will update the post.
You will need a 12-15% fat mince as anythimg leaner and your burgers will be dry and will fall apart. So let’s get started with the recipe.
Before you start you will need to peel the babybels and put them in the freezer for around an hour.
Preheat your oven to 180°C
In a large mixing bowl and the mince, seasonings and ketchup.
Mix the ingredients with a spoon or your hands until everything is combined.
Separate the mixture into 8 parts. Take your burger press and add one of the portions to the burger press and flatten until it covers the bottom.
Make a dip in the centre of the burger (some burger presses have an extra part which does this but if not just use your fingers or the back of a spoon). Remember you just want to make a small dip you do not want to go all the way through the meat. Place the babybel in the dip.
Add another portion of the mince on top of the babybel and using the top part of the burger press, push down to flatten and mould into a burger. Remove from the burger press and place on a baking tray.
Cook for 30 – 40 minutes (or until cooked to your preference) and serve.
I had mine with salad and served others in a bun with fried red onion and curly fries.
Hope you enjoy!
